Rod HochmanRod Hochman, M.D.
President and CEO, Providence St. Joseph Health

Rod Hochman is the president and CEO of Providence St. Joseph Health. Previously, he served as president and CEO of Providence Health & Services. Before joining PH&S in 2012, he was the president and CEO of Swedish Health Services in Seattle and also held leadership positions with Sentara Health Care in Virginia, Health Alliance of Greater Cincinnati and Guthrie Health System in Pennsylvania. Rod serves as chair of Regional Policy Board 9 for the American Hospital Association and as vice chair for the Catholic Health Association. Rod was named the 2015 Innovator of the Year by Press Ganey. He was also selected by Modern Healthcare magazine as one of the 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare in 2014 and 2015, and has been named multiple times as one of Modern Healthcare’s 50 Most Influential Physician Executives. He served as a clinical fellow in internal medicine at Harvard Medical School and Dartmouth Medical School and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians, the American College of Rheumatology and the American College of Healthcare Executives. He received his bachelor’s degree and medical degree from the University of Boston.

Mike Butler is the president of operations for Providence St. Joseph Health and chief executive for Providence Health & Services. He joined Providence in 1998, most recently serving as president of operations and services. Prior to Providence, Mike was the chief operating and financial officer for the Franciscan Health System in Tacoma, Wash., and Catholic Health Initiatives in Englewood, Colo. He currently serves as a board member for Vizient, MultiScale Health Networks and Medical Teams International. He holds a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance from California State University, Fullerton.

Chief Executive, St. Joseph Health

Annette M. Walker is the president of strategy for Providence St. Joseph Health and the chief executive for St. Joseph Health. Annette joined St. Joseph Health in 2005 as executive vice president of strategic services and most recently as interim president and CEO. While she was originally called to serve in laboratory science, over the years she developed extensive experience in strategy, physician integration and wellness. Annette has served on the boards of Santa Rosa Memorial, Petaluma Valley, Queen of the Valley and Mission Hospitals as well as the Congregation of St. Joseph Educational Network. She is also president of American Unity, a SJH professional liability company. Annette holds a bachelor’s degree in biology from Loyola Marymount University and a master’s degree in health care administration from University of Minnesota.
Richard AfableRichard Afable, M.D.
Executive Vice President, Providence St. Joseph Health Southern California Region-Orange County/High Desert
President and CEO, St. Joseph Hoag Health

Richard Afable M.D. is the executive vice president of Providence St. Joseph Health Southern California Region-Orange County/High Desert and the President and CEO of St Joseph Hoag Health. Previously, Rick was the president and CEO of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach and Irvine, Calif. In a previous role, he served as the chief medical officer of Catholic Health East, a 33-hospital health system on the eastern seaboard of the United States. He is the current board chair of the Hospital Association of Southern California and is an officer/chair-elect of the California Hospital Association. He holds a bachelor's degree from Loyola University of Chicago, a master’s in public health from the University of Illinois. He attended medical school at Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine in Maywood Ill. He is board certified in internal medicine and is a fellow of the American College of Physicians.

Executive Vice President and Chief Administrative Officer, Providence St. Joseph Health

Debra Canales is the executive vice president and chief administrative officer for Providence St. Joseph Health. She joined Providence Health & Services in 2014 as executive vice president and chief people and experience officer. An experienced health care executive, Deb served with CHE Trinity Health as executive vice president and chief administrative officer, and as senior vice president of human resources for Centura Health. Deb is a member of the boards of AMICA Mutual Insurance, The Breakaway Group Healthcare Division of Xerox and the Inforum Women’s Alliance Group. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from the University of Texas, Austin, and holds a professional coach certification credential from International Coach Federation.

Executive Vice President and Chief Clinical Officer, Providence St. Joseph Health

Amy Compton-Phillips, M.D., is executive vice president and chief clinical officer for Providence St. Joseph Health. Prior to joining Providence in 2015, she was the chief quality officer at Kaiser Permanente. Amy joined Kaiser Permanente as an internist in 1993, holding a variety of leadership roles in operations, population health and quality. She is a frequent speaker and author, currently serving as a lead advisor for New England Journal Catalyst. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Johns Hopkins University and earned her medical degree from the University of Maryland School of Medicine. She is also a graduate of the Advanced Leadership Program at the University of North Carolina Kenan-Flagler Business School.
Shannon DwyerShannon Dwyer
Executive Vice President and General Counsel, Providence St. Joseph Health

Shannon Dwyer is the executive vice president and general counsel for Providence St. Joseph Health. She has been with St. Joseph Health since 1998 starting as corporate counsel and later becoming executive vice president and general counsel for the SJH system. Prior to SJH, Shannon served as in-house legal counsel for a national physician practice management company. Shannon serves as a board member for American Unity and as board chair for Health Associates Credit Union. She holds a bachelor’s degree in political science from Syracuse University in New York. She also holds a master’s degree in health care administration from Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. She received her law degree from California Western School of Law in San Diego, Calif., and completed the Harvard Law School Executive Education Program in Leadership in Corporate Counsel.

Jo Ann Escasa-Haigh is the executive vice president and interim chief financial officer for Providence St. Joseph Health and chief financial officer for St. Joseph Health. She joined SJH in 2007, most recently serving as executive vice president and chief financial officer. In previous roles, Jo Ann was vice president of finance at PacifiCare (now United Healthcare). She is a member of the board of trustees for St. Joseph Hospital in Orange, Calif., American Unity, Active Wellness, and Community Partnership Fund. She holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration from California State University, Fullerton and a master’s degree in business administration from the University of California, Irvine.

Kristina Hansen Smith is the vice president and chief of leadership services at Providence St. Joseph Health. Kristina joined Providence Health & Services in 2000 and has served in several leadership roles including chief of leadership services, system director of strategic operations management and operational excellence, system director of regional operations support and strategic services director for the Washington region. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., and master’s degrees in health administration and business administration from University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Orest Holubec is the senior vice president and chief communication and external affairs officer for Providence St. Joseph Health. He joined Providence Health & Services in 2010, most recently serving as senior vice president of marketing and communication. Prior to Providence, Orest served as corporate director of external communication for Mercy Health in Ohio. He also served as director of communication and press secretary to the governor of Ohio and held communication leadership roles for the Ohio Legislature and the Ohio Secretary of State’s office. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from John Carroll University.

Managing General Partner, Providence Ventures

Aaron Martin is executive vice president and chief digital and innovation officer for Providence St. Joseph Health. He is also the managing general partner for Providence Ventures. He joined Providence Health & Services in 2014 as the senior vice president of strategy and innovation. Previously, Aaron worked at Amazon where he led the team that transitioned traditional publishers from a physical books business to Kindle. He also held leadership positions at McKinsey & Company and was an executive founder of two early-stage technology companies. Aaron is a board member for Avia Health Innovation, Sqord Inc., and Inland Northwest Health Services. He holds a master’s degree in finance and health care management from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.
Rhonda MedowsRhonda Medows, M.D.
Executive Vice President and Chief Population Health Officer, Providence St. Joseph Health

Rhonda Medows, M.D., FAAFP, is the executive vice president and chief population health officer for Providence St. Joseph Health. Before joining Providence Health & Services in 2015, she served as an executive vice president and chief medical officer at UnitedHealth Group. In previous roles, she was a commissioner for the Georgia Department of Community Health, the state health officer for Georgia and secretary of the Agency for Health Care Administration in Florida. She also was the chief medical officer for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, Southeast Region. Rhonda serves on the Physician-Focused Payment Model Technical Advisory Committee of the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services. She received her bachelor’s degree from Cornell University and her medical degree from Morehouse School of Medicine. Rhonda practiced family medicine at the Mayo Clinic and Kaiser Permanente.

Sister Marian Schubert is the executive vice president and chief mission officer for Providence St. Joseph Health. Previously, she served as the executive vice president of mission integration for St. Joseph Health. She has been a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph of Orange since 1978 and has served in several executive positions. Sister Marian currently serves on the boards of SJH’s Santa Rosa Memorial and Petaluma Valley Hospitals and chairs the Community Partnership Fund in Orange, Calif. She holds a bachelor’s degree in nursing from Mount St. Mary’s College in Los Angeles, a master’s degree and nurse practitioner certificate from the University of California, San Francisco and a master’s degree in health care mission from the Aquinas Institute, St. Louis, Mo.
Cindy StraussCindy Strauss
Executive Vice President and Chief Legal Officer, Providence St. Joseph Health

Cindy Strauss is the executive vice president and chief legal officer for Providence St. Joseph Health. She joined Providence Health & Services in 2012, after serving as vice president and chief legal officer for Swedish Health Services for 12 years. Cindy also worked for Providence earlier in her career, serving as an associate general counsel and senior attorney. She began her career in health law as an attorney with Davis Wright Tremaine in Seattle. Cindy holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Washington and a law degree from Cornell University Law School.
